SPECIFICATIONS FOR CONTROLLED BLASTING IN CIVIL ENGINEERING PROJECTS

THE PAPER IS INTENDED TO GIVE GUIDANCE ON THE WRITING OF A GOOD SPECIFICATION. THE TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF CONTROLLING CONSTRUCTION BLASTING TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO ADJECENT STRUCTURES FROM GROUND VIBRATIONS AND AIR BLAST ARE DISCUSSED. CONTROLLED BLASTING TECHNIQUES AVAILABLE FOR PRODUCING SMOOTH PERIMETERS ON BOTH SURFACE AND TUNNEL EXCAVATIONS ARE REVIEWED AND THE ITEMS WHICH SHOULD BE COVERED IN A GOOD BLASTING SPECIFICATION ARE SET FORTH. ENOUGH EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN ACCUMULATED TO ENABLE ACHIEVEMENT OF WELL CONTROLLED BLASTING. POOR RESULTS HAVE BEEN TRACED TO VAGUE SPECIFICATIONS WHICH DID NOT STATE THE EXPECTED RESULT OR THE DETAILED METHOD TO ACCOMPLISH THE DESIRED RESULT. KNOWLEDGE OF THE BASIC DETAILS OF BLASTING IS ESSENTIAL TO THE WRITING OF AN ACCEPTABLE PERMIT. IT IS SIGNIFICANT THAT MOST OF THE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT CONTROLLED BLASTING IS EMPIRICAL. IN A DISCUSSEION OF VIBRATION CRITERIA, THE ASPECTS OF DAMAGE CRITERIA AND GROUND VIBRATIONS FROM BLASTING ARE CONSIDERED. AIR BLAST EFFECTS AND THE RESPONSE OF HUMANS TO VIBRATION ARE REVIEWED. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF CONTROLLED PERIMETER BLASTING INCLUDING A DESCRIPTION OF LINE DRILLING CUSHION BLASTING, PRESPLITTING AND SMOOTH-WALL BLASTING. SPECIFICATIONS ON GENERAL BLASTING AND SPECIFIC BLASTING PROCEDURES ARE SET FORTH.
