PREDICTING MATERIALS HANDLING PROPERTIES OF TUNNEL MUCK

A CONCEPT OF MUCK CLASSIFICATION WHICH INVOLVED DESIGNATION NUMBERS (MDN) IN A PROGRESSION FROM NO. 1 (FOR MAXIMUM CHUNK SIZE AND A PREDOMINANT DISTRIBUTION IN THE 2 INCH TO 0.25 INCH SIZE RANGE) TO NO. 7 (WITH A RELATIVELY SMALL MAXIMUM SIZE AND A PREDOMINANT DISTRIBUTION BELOW 50 MESH) IS DESCRIBED. A PROGRAM WAS PLANNED IN WHICH EXISTING ENGINEERING PROPERTY DATA COULD BE USED FOR CLASSIFICATION OF FORMATIONS BY ROCK TYPES. TESTING METHODS ARE REVIEWED. SPECIFICATIONS WERE IN ACCORDANCE WITH ASTM STANDARDS. SITES FOR INITIAL SAMPLING WERE PICKED TO PROVIDE EXAMPLES OF STRONG, MEDIUM AND VERY LOW STRENGTH ROCKS EXCAVATED BY CONVENTIONAL, ROLLER CUTTER, AND SHIELD SYSTEMS. MUCK SIZE DISTRIBUTION CURVES WERE PLOTTED AND COMPARED. COMPRESSION TESTS WERE RUN ON SEVENTEEN SETS OF THREE ROCK SPECIMENS IN THE SAME PERIOD. METHODS FOR TESTING ABRASIVENESS AND REBOUND HARDNESS WERE INVESTIGATED AND DATA ON DEFORMATION MODULI WAS COLLECTED. LITHOLOGIC, ROCK PROPERTY AND MUCK PROPERTY DATA ARE STORED FOR RETRIEVAL AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS. NARRATIVE AND GRAPHIC SUMMARIES WERE PREPARED TO COMBINE THESE WITH OPERATING DATA. A PRELIMINARY ALGORITHM WAS DEVELOPED FOR ANALYSIS TO CORRELATE MDN'S WITH ROCK PROPERTIES. REGRESSION ANALYSIS USING ROCK PROPERTIES ALONE LED TO A PREDICTOR EQUATION FOR MDN'S DEFINED BY MUCK SIZE DISTRIBUTION. THIS WAS FOUND TO BE 72 PERCENT ACCURATE. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO ADVANTAGES IN THE USE OF MUCK DESCRIPTIONS WHICH REFER TO SPECIFIC CHARACTERISTICS. GRAPHS AND TABULATIONS ARE PRESENTED.
