PNEUMATIC TRANSPORT SYSTEMS

THE PAPER EXPLAINS THE RADMARK SYSTEM, ITS DEVELOPMENT, AND ITS UTILIZATION IN THE TUNNELING AND MINING FIELD. IT ALSO PROVIDES INSIGHT INTO THE PNEUMATIC CONVEYING PROCEDURE. THE RADMARK SYSTEM IS A POSITIVE PRESSURE, PNEUMATIC CONVEYOR CONTAINING THE COMPOMENTS AIR SOURCE, FEEDER AND PIPELINE. THE AIR SOURCE FOR A PNEUMATIC SYSTEM IS EITHER A COMPRESSOR, AIR SUPPLIED OVER 20 P.S.I.G., OR A BLOWER SUPPLYING CONSTANT VOLUMES OF AIR BELOW 20 P.S.I.G. THE FEEDER DEVICE FOR INTRODUCING THE MATERIAL TO BE CONVEYED INTO THE AIR STREAM, CONSISTS OF A FEEDWHEEL WITH 8 POCKETS ROTATING AT 40 R.P.M. WITHIN A FIXED HOUSING. ONE OF THE REQUIREMENTS IS THAT THE PIPE AND ANCILLARY COMPONENT MUST BE ABRASIVE RESISTANT. IN A REVIEW OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE RADMARK STOWER, ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE DUPLEX STEEL PIPE AND THE RADMARK BAND DEVELOPED FOR PNEUMATIC SYSTEMS TRANSPORTING ABRASIVE MATERIALS. FACTS CONCERNING MUCK HANDLING, FEEDER REFURBISHING, PIPE LIFE AND BACKFILL REPLACEMENT COSTS ARE HIGHLIGHTED. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF TUNNELLING APPLICATION IN CANADA WHICH CONFIRMED THE USE OF THE PNEUMATIC CONVEYOR AS A VIABLE TOOL. THE SYSTEM CAPABILITIES, DESIGN, AND EQUIPMENT IN A PNEUMATIC TUNNEL MUCK HANDLING PROCESS IS DESCRIBED. THE DISADVANTAGES INHERENT IN SUCH AN OPERATION ARE LISTED, AND OTHER MATERIAL HANDLING APPLICATIONS ARE DISCUSSED.
