Precast Concrete Pavements: Technology Overview and Technical Considerations
Precast concrete pavement can be used to rapidly repair and rehabilitate of existing pavements, especially for high-volume, congested roadways with constrained lane closures and work windows. This paper provides an overview of the emerging precast concrete pavement technology and how it is being used in U.S. demonstration projects. Implemented precast concrete pavement systems include proprietary and nonproprietary systems and components. The paper also summarizes a recent study on modular pavement technology that was aimed at developing information and guidelines to encourage its successful adoption. A performance evaluation demonstrates that the four key attributes of precast concrete pavement (constructability, concrete durability, effective load transfer at joints, and effective panel support condition) can be achieved with available technology. However, precast concrete technology is expected to continue to evolve to meet the needs for durable, cost-efficient rapid repair and rehabilitation of existing pavements.
