ROCK MECHANICS INSTRUMENTATION TRANS KOOLAU PILOT TUNNEL

THE TUNNEL IS LOCATED ON THE ISLAND OF OAHU ON THE PROPOSED INTERSTATE HIGHWAY H-3 BETWEEN HONOLULU AND KANEOHE. A THICK SERIES OF VARIOUS TYPES OF LAVA FLOWS AND LENSED PYROCLASTIC ROCK FORMS THE GEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS. BY CONSTRUCTING A PILOT TUNNEL WHICH IS TO BE 4500 FT LONG WITH A 3.56% GRADE, IT IS HOPED THAT THE EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE GAINED FROM THE PILOT PROJECT WILL INCREASE THE SAFETY AND EFFICIENCY OF THE REMAINDER OF THE CONTRACT. ONE OF THE ROCK MASS TESTS INVOLVES DETERMINING IN SITU STRESS WHICH EFFECTS THE VISCOELASTIC AND STRENGTH PROPERTIES BY USING FLAT JACKS AND PHOTOELASTIC CELLS. ANOTHER TEST CONSISTS OF OBTAINING IN SITU STRENGTH OF THE ROCK MASS BY USING THE EXISTING FLAT JACK TEST INSTALLATION. THE RESULTS OF ALL THE TESTS CONDUCTED ABOVE WILL BE USED IN EVALUATING SUPPORT REQUIREMENTS AND DESIGN, LINING DESIGN, STABILITY OF THE ROCK BETWEEN TWO TUNNELS, AND TUNNEL ALIGNMENT. IN SITU VISCOELASTIC CHARACTERISTICS WILL BE USED TO DETERMINE MODULUS OF DEFORMATION, PRIMARY CREEP CURVES, DAMAGED AND DISTRESSED ROCK, AND BEARING STRENGTH FOR RIB FOOTING DESIGN. THESE TESTS WILL INCLUDE ROCK BOLT TESTS, PNEUMATICALLY APPLIED CONCRETE TESTS, LOAD CELLS AND EXTENSOMETERS IN SPECIFIED STEEL SETS, BLASTING METHODS, GEOLOGIC MAPPING, LABORATORY STUDIES, AND MISCELLANEOUS STUDIES. FINALLY A SEMI-AUTOMATIC DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEM, USED BOTH AS A BACKUP AND AN INSTRUMENT RECORDING SYSTEM, WILL BE AVAILABLE.
