New developments in vehicles or powertrains are rare, but the birth of a new brand of car is practically unheard of in today’s automotive environment. The startup of the Qoros, with its financial and logistic support, is what prompted a former BMW senior engineer to take the role as their vehicle engineering director. While there is a risk in this move, the company’s future is promising. Its unique business and engineering model will allow new vehicles to be developed efficiently and bring to market a new family of both gasoline engines and a hybrid powertrain. This is a strategy that only a startup company could implement. While concept, the idea, and the requirements are being developed, new manufacturing partners are being sought to support this vision. Since most suppliers are ahead of the Original Equpment Manufacturers (OEMs), using their capabilities along with the business and engineering strategy, may result in a leading solution. This untraditional relationship is an efficient approach for a startup company since most OEMs can’t stop their huge engine plants. But this is a different approach—that of finding the best partners for the model.
