SKISTADBYGGET, RAFT FOUNDATION OF AN APARTMENT TOWER IN THE CENTER OF DRAMMEN /IN NORWEGIAN/

SKISTADBYGGET IS A 15 STOREY APARTMENT TOWER SITUATED NEAR THE CENTER OF DRAMMEN, NORWAY. IT IS THE HIGHEST BUILDING FOUNDED DIRECTLY ON THE PLASTIC DRAMMEN CLAY. THE FOUNDATION WAS DESIGNED BY THE NORWEGIAN GEOTECHNICAL INSTITUTE ON THE BASIS OF RESULTS OBTAINED FROM RESEARCH ON NORMALLY CONSOLIDATED CLAY. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS CONSIST OF 10 M OF SAND AND 3 M SILTY CLAY OVERLYING 7 M OF PLASTIC CLAY. BELOW THE PLASTIC THERE IS LEAN CLAY EXTENDING TO GREAT DEPTH. THE PLASTIC CLAY EXHIBITS AN APPARENT PRECONSOLIDATION DUE TO LARGE SECONDARY SETTLEMENTS BECAUSE OF ITS OWN WEIGHT. THE OVERCONSOLIDATION RATIO WAS FOUND TO BE 1.35 WHICH WAS CONSIDERED SUFFICIENT FOR FOUNDING THE BUILDING DIRECTLY ON A RAFT FOUNDATION. THE BUILDING GIVES A NET LOAD ON THE GROUND OF 9 T/M SQUARED, THEREBY UTILISING 66 PERCENT OF THE RESERVE RESISTANCE IN THE CLAY. THE TOTAL SETTLEMENT WAS CALCULATED AT 35-40 CM AFTER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME AND WAS ESTIMATED AT 25-30 CM DURING THE LIFETIME OF THE BUILDING. AT PRESENT THE TOTAL SETTLEMENT AMOUNTS TO 16 CM, OF WHICH 6.5 CM HAS TAKEN PLACE AFTER THE COMPLETION OF THE BUILDING IN 1969. THE MAXIMUM DIFFERENTIAL SETTLEMENT IS 2.7 CM MEASURED OVER A DISTANCE OF 15 M. THE MEASUREMENTS WILL CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL YEARS.
