URBAN SEDIMENTATION IN PERSPECTIVE

OPTIMUM AND EFFECTIVE SEDIMENTATION CONTROLS IN URBAN CONSTRUCTION AREAS REQUIRED A BALANCED PERSPECTIVE OF COSTS AND BENEFITS. THE COSTS, WHICH MUST BE ADDED TO THE PRICE OF THE FINISHED PRODUCT, MUST BE BALANCED AGAINST THE BENEFITS TO INDIVIDUALS AND SOCIETY, MOSTLY AS REDUCTION IN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT. BETTER UNDERSTANDING IS NEEDED IN REGARD TO: THE PHYSICAL ASPECTS OF SEDIMENT EROSION, ITS TRANSPORT IN STREAMS, AND THE NATURE OF ITS DEPOSITION IN URBAN AREAS; ALTERNATIVES FOR LAND USE; THE COST OF SEDIMENT IMPACT ON STREAMS AND OTHER WATER BODIES; AND THE COST AND EFFECTIVENESS OF SEDIMENT CONTROL MEASURES.
