IONIC CHEMICAL SOLUTION STABILIZES SLIDING HILLSIDE

THE CALIFORNIA DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS HAS EMPLOYED A PATENTED METHOD OF STRENGTHENING CLAYS WITH IONIC CHEMICAL SOLUTIONS THAT CHANGE INTERNAL PARTICLE FORCES FOR THE PURPOSE OF STABILIZING A MOVING SLIDE ON INTERSTATE 5. THE RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENT, BEGUN IN APRIL 1971, HAVE ENCOURAGED THE DEPARTMENT TO EMPLOY THE METHOD ELSEWHERE. AN ALTERNATIVE WOULD HAVE BEEN TO FLATTEN THE SLOPE OR INSTALL HORIZONTAL DRAINS TO LET THE WATER FLOW FREELY. HOWEVER, DRAINS INSTALLED SEVERAL YEARS AGO WERE CUT AS THE SLIDE CONTINUED TO MOVE. DRAIN INSTALLATION WOULD HAVE COST $150,000; THE IONIC METHOD HAS COST $57,500 SO FAR.
