Development and Influence of Port of Rijeka on the Economy of the Republic of Croatia

Razvoj i utjecaj rijecke luke na gospodarstvo Republike Hrvatske

Owing to its geographical position the Port of Rijeka has retained through history and today an important role in the development of the Republic of Croatia and a large part of the European continent. The road and rail routes strongly connect the Republic of Croatia with its neighbouring countries. The transport of goods in the Port of Rijeka was continuously growing in the time period from 2002-2008, while the leading position among general cargo belongs to the transport of containers. The development of the Port of Rijeka influences the functioning of road and railway traffic and significant logistic activities, such as: freighters, banks, contractual control of goods, maritime agents and other logistic activities. The strategy of traffic development puts an emphasis on the importance of investments in ports of national interest for the Republic of Croatia. The effects of each economic activity, field or company on the national economy can be measured directly and indirectly, supported by a certain methodology. The effects of growth in the development of the Port of Rijeka represent the basics in the determination of the geo-political location of the Republic of Croatia in 21st century, since they define the Port of Rijeka as a geographically and regarding traffic exceptionally important Croatian port.
