SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF GOUGE MATERIAL AS RELATED TO STABILITY UNDERGROUND

OBSERVATIONS DRAWN FROM DOCUMENTED EXPERIENCE REGARDING THE FACTORS WHICH INFLUENCE THE STABILITY PROBLEMS CAUSED BY FAULTS AND SEAMS ARE REVIEWED. THE INFLUENCE OF SIZE OF THE OPENING ON THE STANDUP TIME AND THE ULTIMATE LOADS THAT MAY DEVELOP IS DISCUSSED. LITERATURE REVIEW INDICATES THAT THE EFFECT OF SIZE ON THE STANDUP TIME OF GOUGE MATERIAL IS SIGNIFICANT. THE ORIENTATION OF THE OPENING IN RELATION TO THE STRIKE AND DIP OF AN INDIVIDUAL FAULT OR SEAM CAN INFLUENCE THE STABILITY OF THE OPENING. THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH A FAULT OR SEAM ARE DISCUSSED. THE INFLUENCE OF THE WATER REGIME, AND ITS INFLUENCE IN TERMS OF SWELLING, DISSOLVING, AND OUTWASH, AND THE HAZARD INVOLVED IN THE RELEASE OF LARGE QUANTITIES OF WATER ARE DESCRIBED. CHARACTERISTICS OF GOUGE MATERIAL ARE REVIEWED. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE FACT THAT ALTERATION PRODUCTS ARE A FUNCTION OF THE COMPOSITION AND PH OF THE INVADING FLUIDS, THEIR TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE, AND OF THE COMPOSITION OF THE MATERIAL IN THE FAULT ZONE PRIOR TO THE HYDROTHERMAL ACTION. THE INFLUENCE OF WEATHERING (WHOSE EFFECTS ARE SIMILAR TO THAT OF HYDROTHERMAL ACTION) AND FACTORS WHICH CONTROL IT ARE REVIEWED. A CLASSIFICATION OF GOUGE MATERIALS TOGETHER WITH PERTINENT PROPERTIES, POTENTIAL BEHAVIOR, AND FACTORS INFLUENCING ACTUAL BEHAVIOR IS TABULATED.
