RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN HARD ROCK TUNNELING

SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENTS IN TUNNELING MACHINES AND SUCCESSFUL ROCK TUNNEL EXCAVATION PROJECTS ARE REVIEWED. COLONEL BEAUMONT'S MACHINE BUILT TO EXECAVATE A 7- FOOT DIAMETER TUNNEL BENEATH THE ENGLISH CHANNEL AND THE ROBBINS MODEL 131, A TEN FOOT, SEVEN INCH DIAMETER MACHINE WITH A MAXIMUM RATE OF ADVANCE OF TEN FEET PER HOUR IN SHALE AND SANDSTONE ARE DESCRIBED. A SYSTEMS APPROACH IN TUNNEL MACHINE EXCAVATION IS DISCUSSED AND A METHOD OF FURTHER DEVELOPING THE TECHNIQUE IS ILLUSTRATED. CONVENTIONAL TUNNELING METHODS IN USE TODAY HAVE IMPROVED DRILLING EQUIPMENT AND DRILLING BITS JUMBOS. NOVEL DRILLING METHODS SUCH AS THE FLAME DRILL AND THE ELECTRIC ARC DRILL ARE DESCRIBED AND THEIR STATUS AND ROCK REMOVAL MECHANISM FEATURES ARE TABULATED. THE OBSERVATION IS MADE THAT PRESENTLY, THE METHODS FOR OBTAINING GEOLOGIC AND GEOPHYSICAL DATA ARE POOR. SUGGESTIONS ARE MADE OF THE AREAS IN WHICH IMPROVEMENTS COULD BE MADE. STUDIES COULD BE FURTHER REFINED BY USING COMPUTER PROGRAMS DESIGNED TO CONSIDER DETAILED GEOLOGIC IN-PUT, THE VARIOUS GEOPHYSICAL DATA, ENGINEERING GEOLOGY EVALUATIONS, AND COMPARE THESE EXPLORATORY DATA WITH THE ACTUAL CONSTRUCTION RECORDS FROM COMPLETED TUNNELS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE TRUE DEVEOPMENT IN TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION ARE THE COMBINING OF PROPER METHODS AND EQUIPMENT INTO A SMOOTH WORKING, WELL-INTEGRATED, OVERALL SYSTEM WITH EACH ELEMENT DESIGNED TO PERFORM ITS ROLE SUCH THAT THE TOTAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE IS ACHIEVED.
