SUBSURFACE OPENINGS IN SOIL FIELDS

THE POTENTIAL APPLICATION OF RECENTLY DEVELOPED KNOWLEDGE OF SOIL-STRUCTURE INTERACTION TO THE DEFORMATION OF SUBSURFACE OPENINGS IN SOIL FIELDS IS DISCUSSED. ATTENTION IS DIRECTED TO SOIL FIELDS WITH COHESIVE STRENGTH. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR UNDERGROUND OPENINGS ARE MENTIONED. THE PRINCIPLES OF NATURAL FORMS AND SOIL ARCHING ARE CONSIDERED AND ANALYTICAL METHODS, INCLUDING AN APPROXIMATE METHOD, A CLASSICAL THEORY, AND THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD ARE DETAILED. A TECHNIQUE FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF UNDERGROUND OPENINGS IS PROPOSED. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS WHICH PERMIT IMPROVED UNDERSTANDING OF SOIL STRUCTURE INTERACTION ARE REVIEWED. THIS RAPIDLY DEVELOPING TECHNOLOGY WILL FACILITATE SHALLOW AND DEEP-UNDERGROUND URBAN DEVELOPMENT. A THEORY WHICH DEFINES THE NATURAL ARCH AND DECLIVITY FORMS IN A CONNECTED MEDIUM IS DESCRIBED. BY PROPERLY UTILIZING THE ARCHING CAPACITY OF SOILS, ONLY A SMALL PORTION OF THE OVERBURDEN LOAD NEEDS TO BE SUSTAINED BY A CAVITY LINER. BELOW A CERTAIN DEPTH, THE PERCENTAGE OF THE LOAD WHICH MUST BE TAKEN BY A LINEAR IN A GRANULAR FIELD REMAINS CONSTANT PROVIDED HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE IS NOT PERMITTED TO DEVELOP. AN APPROXIMATE METHOD FOR THE DESIGN OF SUBSURFACE CAVITIES IS DISCUSSED WHICH WILL REQUIRE FURTHER EXPERIMENTS TO CHECK ITS VALIDITY. A NON-LINEAR, THREE- DIMENSIONAL, FINITE ELEMENT COMPUTER PROGRAM IS BEING DEVELOPED FOR THE ANALYSIS OF OPENINGS IN SOIL. THE DIRECTION OF FUTURE DEVELOPMENTAL WORK IS OUTLINED.
