Surface Freight: Rail, Truck, and Intermodal

This issue contains 14 papers concerned with surface freight. The issue is divided into three parts. The first part is concerned with railroad operations. Specific topics addressed include: coordination; car distribution; computer graphics; brokerage feasibility for unit-coal-train shipments; benefit-cost analysis in rail branch-line evaluation; and estimating traffic diversion. The second part is concerned with motor carrier operations. Specific topics addressed include: truck freight operating costs; size advantages for marketing; regulatory reform; and urban pickup and delivery. The third part is concerned with intermodalism. Specific topics addressed include: domestic container use; cost-service modeling; profitability; and the energy crisis.
