SOME MOVEMENT PATTERNS OF TEMPERATE MUDFLOWS: EXAMPLES FROM NORTHEASTERN IRELAND

MOVEMENTS OF SOME TEMPERATE MUDFLOWS WERE MONITORED USING AN ARTECH TIPPING BUCKET RAINFALL RECORDER LINKED TO AN EVERSHOD OPERATIONS RECORDER. A COMPLEX VARIETY OF MOVEMENT PATTERNS REVEALED THAT PRONOUNCED ACCELERATIONS AND DECELERATIONS OCCURRED. SURGES VARIED IN MAGNITUDE, SOME EXCEEDING 2.8 M/HR. THE CONTINUOUS MONITORING METHOD ALSO SHOWS THAT RATES OF MOVEMENT CAN BE INTERRUPTED BY PERIODS OF STABILITY. COMPARISONS BETWEEN RAINFALL DATA AND MOVEMENT SUGGEST THAT RAINFALL HAS AN IMPORTANT EFFECT ON THE BEHAVIOR OF TEMPERATURE MUDFLOWS BECAUSE PRONOUNCED ACCELERATIONS OF MOVEMENT USUALLY FOLLOW PERIODS OF RAINFALL, ALTHOUGH SURGES MAY TAKE PLACE UNACCOMPANIED BY HEAVY PRECIPITATION. THE TOTAL EFFECTS OF A PARTICULAR PERIOD OF RAINFALL MAY ALSO BE DELAYED BY AT LEAST 10 DAYS. THIS SUGGESTS THAT PREVIOUS RAINFALL CONDITIONS CAN MARKEDLY AFFECT VARIATIONS IN THE MOVEMENT PATTERNS OF TEMPERATURE MUDFLOWS. /AUTHOR/
