CORRECTION METHOD AGAINST LANDSLIDE ON MEIHAN NATIONAL HIGHWAY

A LANDSIDE WHICH OCCURRED ON MEIHAN NATIONAL HIGHWAY DURING ITS CONSTRUCTION AND CORRECTION METHODS EMPLOYED THEREAFTER ARE DISCUSSED. AN EMBANKMENT, BUILT IN THE VALLEY ON A HILLY TERRAIN, SUDDENLY BEGAN TO SLIP IN A WET SEASON CAUSING DAMAGE TO RETAINING WALLS, CULVERT BOXES AND THE BASE COURSE OF THE HIGHWAY. AN INVESTIGATION, FOUND A SLIP SURFACE IN THE TALUS DEPOSITS WITH A TERTIARY FORMATION BENEATH THEM. THEN, METHODS FOR PREVENTING THE SEEPAGE OF RAIN WATER, INTERCEPTING THE GROUNDWATER FLOW AND DRIVING THE PILES WERE ADOPTED GIVING GOOD RESULTS TEMPORARILY. HOWEVER, AS THE SLIDING BEGAN TO BECOME LARGER TWO YEARS LATER, A SECOND DETAILED INVESTIGATION WAS MADE OF CORRECTION METHODS PREVIOUSLY APPLIED. BASED ON THE RESULTS OF THE INVESTIGATION, A PERMANENT CORRECTION METHOD WAS PLANNED AND IS BEING CARRIED OUT. /JRA/
