Driving simulation study for the analysis of distraction effects in longitudinal driving behaviour

The FP7 (Seventh Framework Program) European project ISi-PADAS (Integrated Human Modelling and Simulation to support Human Error Risk Analysis of Partially Autonomous Driver Assistance System) worked to develop a new methodology to support risk-based design and approval of PADAS focusing on the elimination or mitigation of driver errors via integrated Driver-Vehicle-Environment (DVE) modeling. ISi-PADAS was particularly focused on longitudinal control, including the selection and maintenance of a safe speed and distance towards preceding cars or obstacles. This paper examines driver behavior in different longitudinal driving scenarios and with distraction caused by a visual and cognitive secondary task while driving. Visual and cognitive distraction effects on longitudinal driving are therefore analyzed, and the results are linked to the modeling phase inside the ISi-PADAS project.
