DEFORMABILITY TESTS AND SOME RESULTS FROM THREE SPANISH DAM SITES

TO DETERMINE THE STRESSES IN THE DAM AND TO MAKE A SOUND JUDGEMENT ABOUT THE SAFETY CONDITIONS OF THE DAM AND ITS FOUNDATION AS A STRUCTURAL UNIT, AN ADEQUATE TESTING PROGRAM MUST BE PERFORMED. SOME CONSIDERATIONS ON THE PREPARATION OF THE TESTS AND PLANNING OF PRINCIPAL ASPECTS ARE PRESENTED TOGETHER WITH TWO EXAMPLES OF TEST PLANNING. REFERENCE IS MADE TO THE ANISOTROPY OF THE ROCK AND ROCK MASSES AND TO LABORATORY AND IN SITU TESTS. TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT IN WHICH DISPLACEMENT AND STRAIN MEASUREMENTS WERE TAKEN USING THE TRANSVERSE ISOTROPY THEORY. THE THEORETICAL DATA, ON WHICH THE CALCULATION OF THE FOUR MOST IMPORTANT ELASTIC CONSTANTS IS BASED, ARE PRESENTED. SOME RECENT RESULTS OBTAINED FROM DEFORMABILITY TESTS AT THE SITES OF GRAN SUARNA, JANOVAS, AND LAS PORTAS DAMS ARE OUTLINED. THE MOST IMPORTANT RESULTS ARE: (1) THOSE RELATING TO THE CASE OF GRAN SUARNA DAM IN WHICH AN ADEQUATE PLAN OF TESTS AND A VERY CAREFUL ANALYSIS OF THE DATA HAVE ENABLED THE VARIATION IN THE MODULUS OF ELASTICITY ALONG THE FOUNDATION SURFACE TO BE OBTAINED; (2) THOSE RESULTING FROM THE STUDY OF THE BEHAVIOR OF ROCK MASSES CORRESPONDING THE BEGINNING OF UNLOADING, WHERE THE PRESSURE-DISPLACEMENT DIAGRAMS HAVE A STEEP INCLINATION; (3) VALUES OF POISSON'S RATIO OBTAINED FROM IN SITU DEFORMABILITY TEST DATA; AND (4) ELASTIC CONSTANTS OF AN ANISOTROPIC ROCK FORMATION AT LAS PORTAS DAM WHICH WAS CONSIDERED TRANSVERSALLY ISOTROPIC. /RRL/
