ROCK STRENGTH CHARACTERISTICS USING THE POINT LOAD METHOD /IN NORWEGIAN/

THE AUTHOR SURVEYS THE PARAMETERS INFLUENCING THE STRENGTH CHARACTERISTICS OF ROCKS AND COMMENTS ON THE UNCONFINED COMPRESSION TEST AS A MEANS OF OBTAINING THESE PARAMETERS. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE POINT LOAD TEST WHICH ALLOWS FIELD TESTING OF ROCK SAMPLES AND OF THE APPARATUS USED IN THE TEST. THE POINT LOAD STRENGTH IS DEFINED TOGETHER WITH THE THEORETICAL RELATIONS ON WHICH THE TEST IS BASED. THE ANISOTROPIC FEATURES OF THE ROCK TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT IN THE TEST ARE MENTIONED AND A COMPARISON MADE BETWEEN THE RESULTS OBTAINED BY THE UNCONFINED COMPRESSION TEST AND THE POINT LOAD TEST. MENTION IS MADE OF A SYSTEM FOR CLASSIFYING FISSURED ROCK AND IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE STRENGTH CHARACTERISTICS OF A ROCK AT PRESENT MAY MOST CONVENIENTLY BE DESCRIBED BY ITS PETROGRAPHIC NAME FOLLOWED BY THE POINT LOAD INDEX AND THE FISSURE INDEX IN SPECIFIED UNITS. THE FUTURE APPLICATIONS OF THIS CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM IN RELATION TO ROCK MECHANICS PROBLEMS ARE DISCUSSED. /RRL/
