Prevalence of Fatigue in a Group of Airline Pilots

This study examines fatigue in Portuguese airline pilots. Fatigue is common among airline pilots and can compromise safety if crew members are not alert enough to perform their tasks, leaving them at risk of accidents. This study was the first to examine prevalence values of fatigue in Portuguese airline pilots. The authors hypothesized that medium- and short-haul pilots would show different levels of fatigue than long-haul pilots. They conducted a survey of Portuguese pilots, with questions measuring subjective fatigue and the pilots' perceptions of fatigue. The authors found that medium- and short-haul pilots had higher levels of both mental and total fatigue than long-haul pilots.
