An Introduction to Cybersecurity Issues in Modern Transportation Systems
This article examines cyber vulnerabilities and security in transportation networks. Highlighted are vulnerabilities in the following areas: advanced traveler information systems (ATIS), field devices, center-to-field network, and transportation management centers. The author suggests several steps that can ensure the effectiveness of cybersecurity practices, including assessment of system threats, employing self-assessment tools to identify vulnerabilities, improving communication between national cybersecurity experts and state and local and operators, and institutionalizing practices to increase resiliency in the transportation system.
