Accuracy of GPS Speed and Location Data Measured in Emergency Vehicles

This paper describes how global positioning system (GPS) technology allows a receiver to receive data from a network of satellites in orbit around the earth. The paper discusses how most emergency vehicles, such as police vehicles and fire trucks are usually equipped with GPS systems. These systems can record vehicle speed and location. The GPS data can be collected by an onboard computer or a central server in order to assist with accident reconstruction in the event that one of these emergency vehicles are in a collision. The speed of the vehicle just before the collision is typically of great importance with reconstruction and the GPS data may also be useful in determining the traveled path of the vehicle and its direction prior to impact.
