STUDY OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF MARLY LIMESTONE BY MEANS OF IN-SITU AND LABORATORY TESTS /IN FRENCH/

RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF LABORATORY AND IN-SITU TESTS CARRIED OUT TO DEFINE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF VARIOUS TYPES OF MARLY LIMESTONE (SOUND, OXIDIZED, WEATHERED) WHICH WILL SERVE AS FOUNDATION TO A LARGE DAM. THE RESULTS CONCERN: (1) THE VALUES OF BASIC COMMON CHARACTERISTICS OBTAINED IN THE LABORATORY; (2) THE BEHAVIOR OF THE MATERIAL IN THE PRESENCE OF WATER, AND SPECIAL WEATHERING TESTS UNDER CONTROLLED LATERAL PRESSURE WHICH SHOWED THE EXISTENCE OF A LIMIT PRESSURE ABOVE WHICH THE WEATHERING ABILITY BECOMES NIL; (3) THE DEFORMABILITY OF THE ROCK UNDER LOAD DETERMINED IN IN-SITU TESTS COMPARED TO LABORATORY TESTS; AND (4) THE MECHANICAL STRENGTH OBTAINED IN THE LABORATORY (IN SIMPLE SHEAR COMPRESSION AND TRIAXIAL COMPRESSION TEST WITH VERY HIGH PRESSURES) AND IN-SITU ON A LARGE ROCK MASS (SIMPLE COMPRESSION TESTS AND DIRECT SHEAR TESTS). RESULTS SHOW THE NON-LINEARITY OF STRENGTH CURVES, AND A DECREASE IN THE PRIMARY FAILURE STRENGTH WHICH IS A RESULT OF THE INFLUENCE OF THE NATURAL STRUCTURE. POST- FAILURE TESTS SHOW THE PECULIARITY OF RESIDUAL STRENGTH CURVES WITH A BREAK BETWEEN TWO FIELDS OF STRESSES, THE FIRST (LOW STRESSES) BEING CHARACTERIZED BY A MARKED GROWTH AND NO COHESION, THE SECOND (HIGH STRESSES) BY A VERY SLOW GROWTH. /TRRL/
