APPLICATION OF THE ELASTIC THEORY TO THE CALCULATION OF THE SETTLEMENT OF HIGHWAY EMBANKMENTS /IN FRENCH/

THE FIRST PART GIVES RESULTS OF THE DIRECT CALCULATION OF THE SETTLEMENT OF HIGHWAY EMBANKMENTS. THE SECOND PART PRESENTS VALUES OF THE STRESSES USED FOR THE INDIRECT CALCULATION OF SETTLEMENT WHEN DIRECT CALCULATION IS NOT POSSIBLE. TWO PARAMETERS PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE SETTLEMENT OF EMBANKMENTS: LENGTH OF THE EMBANKMENT AND THICKNESS OF THE SOIL LAYER; THE INFLUENCE OF THESE PARAMETERS ON STRESSES IS NOT VERY MARKED. MENTION IS MADE OF THE FACT THAT WHEN THESE RESULTS ARE USED FOR SOLVING PRACTICAL PROBLEMS, ACCOUNT MUST BE TAKEN OF THE ASSUMPTIONS ON WHICH THE RESULTS ARE BASED. /TRRL/
