Aiding & Abetting in a Good Way
This article profiles the campus safety initiatives of Texas Tech University, including its replacement of physical parking permits with a license plate recognition (LPR) system. LPR is used by the university police department to locate stolen vehicles on campus, find vehicles involved in hit-and-run accidents, locate vehicles of those who have threatened campus events, and to help solve other campus crimes. The authors discuss both the system's successes in its first 18 months and criticisms of the system from civil rights organizations and other individuals. They address the privacy practices of the LPR system and highlight that data from the LPR system are not shared with any entity outside the university system.
