FOUNDATIONS IN SWELLING CLAY BENEATH A GRANULAR BLANKET

GRANULAR FILL CONTAINING ABOUT 15% OF FINES WAS PLACED ON THE SITE OF THE STATE ELECTRICITY COMMISSION'S TERMINAL STATION SITUATED ABOUT THREE MILES FROM HORSHAM, VICTORIA, TO ASSIST DRAINAGE AND CONTROL FOUNDATION MOVEMENT. THE PAPER DESCRIBES A STUDY BEING MADE OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THIS BLANKET IN CONTROLLING THE MOVEMENT OF FOUNDATIONS SET IN OR ABOVE SWELLING CLAYS AND DESCRIBES THE METHODS USED IN DESIGNING FOUNDATIONS TO MINIMIZE FOUNDATION MOVEMENT. THE STUDY IS CONTINUING WITH OBSERVATIONS OF FOUNDATION LEVELS AND SOIL MOISTURE CONTENT BEING MADE PERIODICALLY. THE RESULTS OF OBSERVATIONS UP TO JANUARY, 1970. ARE PRINTED IN THE PAPER. /AUTHOR/
