A NEW MODEL TO DESCRIBE STABILIZED SOIL BEHAVIOUR

BECAUSE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF DEGREE OF PULVERIZATION AND COMPACTED DENSITY ON STABILIZED CLAYS STRENGTH, A MODEL HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO EXPLAIN AND PREDICT THE ENGINEERING BEHAVIOR OF LIME AND CEMENT-STABILIZED CLAY SOILS USING THESE TWO PARAMATERS AS VARIABLES. IN THE MODEL THE DENSITY AND EXTENT OF STABILIZATION OF TWO COMPONENTS, THE LUMPS AND MATRIX, ARE SEPARATELY EVALUATED. THE WEAKER OF THE TWO COMPONENTS, AND THUS THE ONE IN WHICH OVERALL SPECIMEN FAILURE ORIGINATES, WAS CONCLUDED TO CHANGE AS OVERALL COMPACTED DENSITY IS VARIED. THE POSTULATED MODEL WAS VARIFIED BY A SERIES OF LIME DIFFUSION TESTS AND UNCONFINED COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH TESTS ON COARSELY PULVERIZED STABILIZED CLAYS, COMPACTED AT VARYING DENSITIES. /TRRL/
