Taming the Devil's Slide
New twin tunnels on California's scenic Route 1 have made it possible to close a dangerous stretch of the coastal highway between the communities of Pacifica and Montara. The first such structures built in the state since 1964, the $439-million highway tunnels were designed to meet stringent seismic and environmental requirements and were constructed by means of the new Austrian tunneling method.
