Democratized Design
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) produces 3D visualizations that help get buy-in on highway improvement projects through strategic communication with stakeholders and the public. Such visualizations expedited the selection of the best design for reducing traffic congestion and the chance of collision at the State Route (SR) 20 Sharpes Corner intersection. More than 30,000 vehicles per day travel through the Sharpes Corner intersection, which is expected to increase to 52,000 vehicles per day by 2030. WSDOT project evaluated design alternatives that would provide the most effective solution for maximizing safe traffic flow. Lifelike visualizations were developed and presented to the community at public open houses organized to communicate the merits of each alternative and to get the community’s feedback to select the best design. A modified roundabout was recommended because it exceeds the minimum 20-year design life, meets the criteria for safety, and can be built with the allotted budget.
