A LOCAL AUTHORITY MATERIAL ENGINEERS APPROACH

THIS PAPER DESCRIBES ONE COUNTY'S APPROACH TO CEMENT STABILIZED MATERIALS AND IN PARTICULAR THE USE OF LEAN CONCRETE. THE PAPER POINTS OUT THAT BETWEEN ONE HALF AND ONE THIRD OF ALL CEMENT STABILISED MATERIALS ARE LAID ON ROADS OTHER THAN MOTORWAYS AND TRUNK ROADS. IN CONSIDERING COSTS THE PAPER SHOWS THAT THE MATERIALS ARE NO LONGER CHEAP AND IT QUERIES WHETHER SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE CONTRIBUTING TOO MUCH TO INCREASED COSTS BY THEIR RIGIDITY. IN CONCLUSION THE PAPER CONSIDERS METHODS OF CONTROL AND SUGGESTS THAT LOCAL GOVERNMENT SHOULD CONTRIBUTE MORE TO RESEARCH.
