INSULATION OF VERGES AGAINST INFILTRATING WATER

ISOLERING AF RABATTER MOD NEDSIVENDE VAND

WATER OR SALINE WATER FROM THE SURFACE OF THE PAVEMENT OF A ROAD MAY IN CERTAIN CASES INFILTRATE A FROST SUSCEPTIBLE BASE COURSE AFTER HAVING PASSED THE SPACE BETWEEN THE EDGE OF THE PAVEMENT AND THE VERGE. THE BEARING CAPACITY OF THIS BASE COURSE WILL DECREASE WITH INCREASING MOISTURE CONTENT, AND USUALLY THE PAVEMENT WILL HAVE LONGITUDINAL CRACKS. SOME TESTS ARE BEING CARRIED OUT IN THE COUNTIES OF VEJLE AND RINGKOBING. THE TOP SOIL IS REMOVED FROM THE TOTAL WIDTH OF THE VERGE TO A DEPTH OF 15 CM UNDER THE LEVEL OF THE WEARING COURSE. A WATER-PROOF MAT REINFORCED WITH FIBRES OF POLYESTER IS ATTACHED BY MEANS OF BITUMINOUS EMULSION TO THE 15 CM OUTER EDGE OF THE WEARING COURSE. THE REST OF THE MAT, WHICH HAS A WIDTH OF 185 CM IS PLACED ON THE EXPOSED SURFACE OF THE VERGE. THE MAT IS SEALED WITH 0.5 KG/M2 BITUMINOUE EMULSION AND ONCE MORE WITH 1.5 KG/M2 AND FINALLY COVERED WITH 5 CM SAND. A NEW WEARING COURSE IS LAID AFTER APPLICATION OF A TACK COAT ON THE OLD SURFACING INCLUDING THE 15 CM OF THE MAT. THE SAND IN THE VERGE IS COVERED WITH TURF OR SOIL. THE TESTS STARTED IN THE AUTUMN OF 1970, VUT, OWING TO MILD WEATHER, RESULTS ARE NOT YET AVAILABLE.
