STREETS STABILIZED WITH CHEMICAL PLUS CUTBACK

A COMBINATION OF CHEMICAL AND CUTBACK ASPHALT HAS BEEN USED TO STABILIZE 50,000 SQ YD OF STREETS IN PLANT CITY, FLA. THE PROJECT WAS DESIGNED TO TEST WAYS OF MINIMIZING USE OF BASE AGGREGATES WHICH ARE BECOMING DEPLETED IN THE AREA. A CONTRACT INVOLVED THE FOLLOWING STEPS TO STABILIZE 6 IN. DEPTH OF THE SANDY SOIL. 1. THE BASE SOIL WAS FIRST SCRIFIED TO SPECIFIED DEPTH AND THOROUGHLY WETTED. 2. ASPHALT CUTBACK WAS APPLIED WITH A DISTRIBUTOR AT 0.5 GAL PER SQ YD. THE CUTBACK WAS THOROUGHLY MIXED USING A TRAVELING PULVERIZING MIXER. 3. AFTER THE CUTBACK WAS MIXED IN, SA-1 CHEMICAL STABILIZER AND WATER WERE APPLIED. SA-1 CONCENTRATE WAS PREPARED IN A SOLUTION OF 1 GAL OF THE CHEMICAL PER 1000 GAL OF WATER. (WATER CAN BE VARIED BASED ON MOISTURE CONTENT OF SOIL.) THE DILUTED SOLUTION WAS APPLIED AT 2 GAL PER SQ YD USING A WATER TRUCK AND THE ENTIRE WORKING AREA WAS GIVEN ONE OR MORE MIXING PASSES BY A PULVER-MIXER. FINAL MIXING WAS CONTINUED UNTIL AERATION HAD PRODUCED OPTIMUM MOISTURE CONTENT. THEN THE BASE WAS BLADED TO FINISHED GRADE AND COMPACTED WITH A 10-TON RUBBER-TIRED ROLLER. FINISH ROLLING WAS SPECIFIED TO BE PERFORMED WITH A 10-TON TANDEM STEEL ROLLER. ROLLING PASSES WERE CONTINUED TO PRODUCE 95 PERCENT OF STANDARD PROCTOR DENSITY. USING RC-70 AGAIN, THE COMPLETED BASE WAS SURFACE TREATED WITH ANOTHER PASS OF THE ASPHALT DISTRIBUTOR, DROPPING 0.2 GAL PER SQ YD. SAND AT THE RATE OF 0.2 CU FT PER SQ YD WAS APPLIED AND FINAL RUBBER- TIRE ROLLING COMPLETED THE BASE PREPARATION. AN INCH DEPTH OF TYPE II ASPHALT MIX WAS APPLIED TO HIS PREPARED BASE TO COMPLETE THE JOB. THE SA-I CHEMICAL CONCENTRATE IS IN ITSELF, NOT A CEMENTING AGENT OR BONDING MATERIAL. ITS PRINCIPAL FUNCTION IS TO REMOVE ORGANIC RESIDUES AND CERTAIN ADVERSE CHEMICAL COMBINATIONS FROM THE SOIL, THROUGH ACCELERATED REDUCTION OXIDATION. THE RESULT SOUGHT IS TO IMPROVE SOIL STABILITY BY INCREASING THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION BETWEEN SOIL PARTICLES AND ALSO TO BRING ABOUT A BETTER SOIL MOISTURE EQUILIBRIUM. THE CHEMICAL IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR PREDOMINANTLY CLAYEY OR SILTY SOILS, BUT FOR SANDY OR GRANULAR SOILS, PARTICULARLY WHERE SOFT CARBONATES OCCUR OR ARE BROUGHT IN BY ADDITION OF MATERIALS SUCH AS SHELL OR CALICHE. A 30 PERCENT SAVINGS WAS REALIZED OVER THE CONVENTIONAL METHOD. A STRICT ADHERENCE TO PROPER APPLICATIONS IS NECESSARY IN THE USE OF SA-1. THE PROJECTS IN FLORIDA PERFORMED WELL WHEN BUILT PROPERLY. THE AMOUNT OF ASPHALT AND CHEMICAL IS DETERMINED BY LAB MIXES AND THE FINAL JUDGMENT IN DETERMINING THE AMOUNT OF CHEMICAL AND ASPHALT TO USE IS BASED ON ECONOMY AND BEARING STRENGTH.
