ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS IN SOIL COMPACTION FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE CONTRACTOR

THE COSTS OF A COMPACTION OPERATION ARE SIGNIFICANTLY INFLUENCED BY THE CHOICE OF SUITABLE EQUIPMENT IN RELATION TO THE SOIL TYPE AND THE HEIGHT OF FILL, BY WEATHER CONDITIONS AND BY THE TESTING OF THE STABILIZED SOIL (MOST LIKELY BY RAPID METHODS OF MEASUREMENT). THE ARTICLE ILLUSTRATES THE COMPACTION OF COHESIVE SOILS AND MIXED SOILS WITH SHEEPSFOOT ROLLERS, THE COMPACTION OF COHESIVE SOILS WITH HEAVY TRAILER-VIBRATING SHEEPSFOOT ROLLERS, AND THE COMPACTION OF SILTY SOILS WITH RUBBER-TIRED ROLLERS. THE AUTHOR RECOMMENDS COMPACTION WITH EXCAVATOR-OPERATED STAMPERS. IT IS STRESSED THAT EACH COMPACTION TASK IS A SPECIAL CASE, AND THAT EXCHANGES OF IDEAS ON COMPACTION BETWEEN CONTRACTING PARTIES WOULD BE IN THE BEST INTERESTS. /TRRL/
