SOIL COMPACTION BY BLASTING

SOIL COMPACTION BY BLASTING IS A TECHNIQUE BY WHICH SOME OF THE EFFECTS OF EXPLOSIONS (E.G. VIBRATIONS, SHOCK WAVES, DETONATIVE IMPACT, COMPRESSION, ETC.) ARE UTILIZED FOR THE PURPOSE OF SOIL COMPACTION. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE METHODS OF COMPACTION, PRESENTS THE PROBLEMS OF DEVELOPMENT, AND GIVES AN OUTLINE OF THE POSSIBLE FIELDS OF APPLICATION. IT IS EMPHASIZED THAT THE VARIOUS TECHNIQUES AND DIMENSIONING OF BLASTING CHARGES ARE BASED UPON PRACTICAL EXPERIENCES, EXPERIMENTS AND OBSERVATIONS, SINCE A THEORY RELATING THE BLASTING MECHANISM AND BEHAVIOR OF SOILS IS NOT KNOWN AS YET. /AUTHOR/
