SOIL COMES OUT. GOES BACK IN TO ELIMINATE PILES

TWO 21-STORY CONDOMINIUMS OF REINFORCED CONCRETE ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION ON THE SANDY BEACHES OF SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO USING A DESIGN THAT HAS ELIMINATED PILES AND SAVED $610,000 ON THE $13 MILLION PROJECT. TO ACHIEVE THE REQUIRED BEARING CAPACITY FOR THE BUILDINGS FORMULATION MATS, THE SOIL WAS EXCAVATED TO A DEPTH OF 20 FT THROUGH A 16 FT LAYER OF SAND AND A 4 FT LAYER OF INORGANIC SILT BELOW. THE SOIL WAS MIXED ON-SITE IN A RATIO OF FOUR PARTS SAND TO ONE PART SILT. SHEEPSFOOT ROLLERS WERE USED TO RECONSOLIDATE AND RECOMPACT THE SOIL IN 8 IN LAYERS IN THE ORIGINAL EXCAVATED HOLE.
