Visibility checking method for railway signals by cab-mounted camera

This paper focuses on obstruction-warning signals, which serve critical functions at level-crossings in Japan. Because the visibility of obstruction-warning signals cannot be checked during train operating hours due to service disruption, the authors propose a method to check signal visibility during in-service hours using infrared light emitting diodes (LEDs). Functional field tests are conducted. Findings show that the proposed image processing method can accurately detect specific signal blinking, using a near infrared camera and a pan-tilt camera.
