Public spirited

This article takes a look at ways in which drunk and drugged driving can be eliminated, in potentially more effective ways than random breath testing. As almost 10,000 people died in drunk-driving crashes in the United States in one year, and a quarter of all road deaths are alcohol-related in Europe, it is a problem that needs to be addressed. Methods dealing with drunk driving, such as Driver Alcohol Detection Systems for Safety (DADSS), non-intrusive systems, road access prevention infrastructure, are discussed. Drugged driving detection and prevention is more complicated, requiring blood tests as well as field impairment tests. Data on impaired driving from countries throughout the world is increasing, and with that knowledge, more drunk-driving laws are being passed.
