Ensuring timetable stability with train traffic data

This paper describes the graphic data visualization and mathematical methods that Swiss Federal Railways uses to optimize train timetables. It uses vast amounts of historical train traffic data to accomplish this task. Data collected include actual arrival and arrival delay times, and actual departure and departure delay times. The paper also explores the various types of analyses that these methods facilitate, including dwelling time, arrival punctuality, journey time, departure punctuality, journey time deviation and dwelling time deviation.
