ROADSIDE PLANNING AND ZONING FOR WEST VIRGINIA

THIS REPORT PROVIDES INFORMATION ABOUT THE NEED FOR ROADSIDE PLANNING AND ZONING AND A PROPOSED BILL TO ACCOMPLISH THIS. PHOTOGRAPHS ARE USED TO SHOW HOW MUCH SOME TYPE OF ROADSIDE PROTECTION IS NEEDED. THESE PHOTOS ILLUSTRATE STRIP DEVELOPMENT, INADEQUATE BUILDING SETBACKS, ENCROACHING SIGNS, INCOMPATIBLE USES, AS WELL AS SEVERAL ILLUSTRATIONS OF WELL-PLANNED DEVELOPMENT. THE STUDY STAFF RECOMMENDS PROTECTIVE STRIPS ALONG STATE HIGHWAYS NOT TO EXCEED 1,000 FEET DEEP ON EACH SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. WITHIN THESE STRIPS A BOARD /TO BE COMPOSED OF THE COMMISSIONER OF COMMERCE, THE STATE ROAD COMMISSIONER, AMONG OTHERS/ WOULD REGULATE THE TYPES OF LAND USES PERMITTED AS WELL AS THE LOCATION, HEIGHT, SIZE, AND APPEARANCE OF BUILDINGS. /BPR/
