HEAT BALANCE AT THE SOIL--AIR INTERFACE AND FROST PENETRATION INTO THE SOIL

AN ATTEMPT HAS BEEN MADE TO DETERMINE MEAN MONTHLY VALUES FOR SEVERAL FACTORS BY APPLYING CLIMATOLOGICAL NORMS FOR THE PERIOD 1901--1930 AT A SINGLE NORWEGIAN STATION WHOSE COORDINATES ARE APPROXIMATELY 60 DEG N AND 11 DEG E. THE EQUATIONS USED TO COMPUTE RADIATION BALANCE, SOIL HEAT FLUX, AND THE TRANSFER OF LATENT AND SENSIBLE HEAT ARE EXPLAINED. FINALLY, AN INTEGRAL REPRESENTING HEAT FLUX INTO THE SOIL DURING THAW AND THE TOTAL DEPTH OF THE MELTED SNOWPACK ARE EVALUATED, AND THE BUDGET FOR THE GAINS AND LOSSES OF ENERGY DUE TO PHASE CHANGES IN THE WATER CONTENT IN THE SOIL AND SNOWPACK HAS BEEN CALCULATED.
