THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF SOME HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS - PART II /IN NORWEGIAN - ENGLISH SUMMARY/

IF A SOIL IS DRY, WATER-SATURATED, OR ICE-FILLED, THE TWO-PHASE SYSTEM OF PARTICLES AND FLUID CAN BE TREATED THEORETICALLY WITH MUCH SUCCESS. OF THE DIFFERENT IDEALIZED MODELS USED, THE TWO MOST COMMON ARE CONSIDERED IN THIS PAPER. CALCULATED DATA FOR A LAYERED SYSTEM OF WATER-SATURATED SAND ARE COMPARED WITH DATA FOR SATURATED SAND CALCULATED FROM AN EMPIRICAL EQUATION DERIVED BY KERSTEN. THESE, TOGETHER WITH EXPERIMENTAL DATA OF KERSTEN, ARE COMPARED WITH THE RESULTS OF KUNII'S EQUATION DERIVED FROM THE SPHERE PACKING MODEL. THE COMPARISON IS SAID TO EXPLAIN THE VARIATION FOUND IN KERSTEN'S EXPERIMENTAL DATA: EXPERIMENTAL POINTS FROM THE SAME SAND FALL CLOSE TO THEORETICAL CURVES REPRESENTING THE SAME PARTICLE CONDUCTIVITY. GEMANT PROPOSED AN IDEALIZED MODEL FOR MOIST SAND WHOSE ASSUMED GEOMETRIC CONFIGURATION OF WATER AND SAND PARTICLES DOES NOT HOLD UP WELL, ESPECIALLY FOR SMALL WATER CONTENTS. THIS SUGGESTS THAT A THEORETICAL TREATMENT OF MOIST SAND WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE WITHOUT INTRODUCING SOME KIND OF EMPIRICAL FACTORS. A FIGURE IS INTRODUCED IN WHICH KERSTEN'S DATA ARE TRANSFORMED INTO DIMENSIONLESS QUANTITITIES, AND THE GENERAL FORM OF THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY AND WATER CONTENT APPEAR CLEARLY. IN COMBINATION WITH CALCULATED DATA FOR DRY, WATER-SATURATED, AND ICE-FILLED SAND, THESE GENERAL RELATIONS MAY BE USED FOR PREDICTING THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF MOIST OR FROZEN SAND.
