In the Blink of an Eye
This article profiles the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings and the roles that parking and transportation officials played in restoring calm to the chaos. Of the many roles that the transportation departments played, a critical one was their continued communication with the public about the re-opening of streets that had been cleared for the race and the subsequent investigation. Surveillance cameras and license plate recognition systems in city garages also played a critical role in locating the suspected bombers, as did investigation of the suspects' parking violations and registration records. The article highlights the importance of having emergency procedures in place as well as open lines of communication between transportation departments in responding to such events.
