This article reports on the ways in which bridge expansion joints can be replaced with little or no impact on traffic, and without compromising performance or durability. This is achieved by minimizing the amount of existing structure that must be removed, and thereby the reconstruction needed. Costs can then be optimized in terms of construction and maintenance. In addition, other stakeholders, such as local residents, benefit in terms of reduction in noise and dust pollution, as well as lower environmental impacts with the re-use of existing materials and reduced energy use and exhaust fumes.
