DEFORMATION OF ROADS ON EMBANKMENTS OF SWELLING SOIL /IN BULGARIAN/

THE RESULTS OF LABORATORY TESTS OF THE SWELLING PROCESS RESULTING FROM THE SATURATION OF SYNTHETICALLY COMPACTED AND DRIED SOIL SAMPLES ARE DISCUSSED. THE METHODOLOGY USED IS DESCRIBED, AND THE INFLUENCE OF THE INITIAL MOISTURE CONTENT DURING COMPACTION, THE INITIAL DENSITY AND THE LOADING ON THE SWELLING PROCESS IS DETERMINED. CONCLUSIONS ARE DRAWN REGARDING DEFORMATION OF ROAD BEDS IN SWELLING SOILS. A METHOD OF CALCULATING THE DEFORMATION OF ROADS ON EMBANKMENTS OF SWELLING SOIL IS PROPOSED, TOGETHER WITH A METHOD OF EVALUATING THE POSSIBLE USE OF SWELLING SOILS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF EMBANKMENTS. AN OPTIMUM MOISTURE CONTENT IS RECOMMENDED FOR THE COMPACTION OF EMBANKMENTS OF SWELLING SOIL. /RRL/
