SIX-AXLE 10,600 HP LOCOMOTIVE SELECTED FOR GOTTHARD ROUTE
Increasing passenger and freight traffic between Germany and Italy using the Gotthard tunnel has created the need for six-axle electric locomotives of around 10,000 hp which are able to ascend the 2.6 percent gradients at 80 km/h without imposing excessive wear on curves. As the need to keep down forces exerted on the track precluded the use of three-axle bogies, four prototype Bo-Bo-Bo locomotives were ordered by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) from SLM Winterthur with Brown Boveri traction equipment; they were delivered between May and October last year. Following extensive trials, a series production order for 45 has been placed by SBB with the same companies.
