NATURAL ROCK USED AS PROTECTION AGAINST FROST IN MOTORWAY CONSTRUCTION IN WESTFALEN AND HESSEN /IN GERMAN/

THE AUTHOR REPORTS ON THE TENDERING AND LETTING OF CONTRACTS RELATING TO THE USE OF NATURAL ROCK AGGREGATES FROST-PROTECTION MATERIAL FOR THE HAGEN-SIEGEN-GIESSEN MOTORWAY. THE TECHNICAL AND SUPPLY CONDITIONS ARE DISCUSSED IN DETAIL. FOR NORDRHEIN-WESTFALEN A MIXTURE OF BROKEN NATURAL ROCK WITHIN A PRESCRIBED GRADING CURVE WAS REQUIRED; FOR HESSEN AN AGGREGATE OF SIMPLY BROKEN CHIPPINGS INACCORDANCE WITH THE NEW TVT SPECIFIED GRADING CURVE. THE AUTHOR MAKES THE FOLLOWING POINTS WITH REFERENCE TO EXPERIENCE HITHERTO: THE GRADING REQUIRED IN HESSEN IS TOO SMALL FOR FROST-PROTECTION MATERIAL; THE QUALITY OF THE MATERIAL SUPPLIED FROM VARIOUS SOURCES EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS; THE EXTENSIVE SITE CONTROL TESTS WERE ONLY OF LIMITED VALUE, AND THE FROST BLANKET COURSE WAS ABLE TO BE USED BY TRANSPORT ON THE SITE EVEN WITHOUT A BITUMINOUS PROTECTIVE COATING. /FG/RRL/
