THE FRACTURE TOUGHNESS OF TWO LOW STRENGTH STRUCTURAL STEELS

The variation of C.O.D. with temperature on test pieces of full section size and of standard Charpy dimensions is illustrated for a 2 1/4 in thick as-rolled mold steel, and a 2 in thick Ducol W-30 in the normalized and tempered condition. The effect on C.O.D. of notch acuity is also considered. Possible methods of obtaining the C.O.D. using angle of bend, notch root contraction and displacement values measured using a linear clip gauge are discussed. The preliminary results illustrate the influence on C.O.D. of test temperature, test piece size, notch acuity and loading rate.
