Is Lead Dead? A Look Back and a Look Forward at 20 Years of Bridge Painting Under the OSHA Lead in Construction Interim Final Rule and Other Related Standards
This article looks back at the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)'s standard for protecting construction workers from lead exposure (29 CFR 1926.62), on the occasion of the standard's 20th anniversary. The author reports statistics on violations of the standard among painting and other construction trades, reports on health risks posed by lead exposure, summarizes findings on blood lead levels, and reviews 1926.62 and related regulations affecting lead exposure. In addition, the article offers recommendations and questions for those involved with lead paint removal on bridges and other structure.
