MEASUREMENT OF FREE ENERGY OF SOIL MOISTURE BY THE PSYCHROMETRIC TECHNIQUE, USING THERMISTORS

THE PSYCHROMETRIC OR WET BULB DEPRESSION TECHNIQUE PROVIDES A SIMPLE, RAPID AND ACCURATE MEASUREMENT OF THE TOTAL AND SOLUTE SUCTIONS OF SOIL MOISTURE IN THE RANGE PF 2.0 TO AT LEAST 5.0. THE INSTRUMENT HAS A LINEAR CALIBRATION FOR SUCTION IN CM. WATER, ATM AND HAS A CALIBRATION ACCURACY OF PLUS OR MINUS 150 CM. WATER OR PLUS OR MINUS 3 PERCENT, WHICHEVER IS GREATER. WITH IMPROVED ADJUSTMENTS AND MORE STABLE COMPONENTS, CONSIDERABLE INCREASE IN ACCURACY CAN BE EXPECTED. THE TIME REQUIRED FOR ACCURATE READINGS VARIES FROM A FEW MINUTES AT PF 5.0 AND OVER TO 24 HOURS AT PF 0.
