Segregation and degradation in commercial SBS binders
Twelve randomly selected commercial styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) polymer modified binders (PMBs) were tested. Five of these binders were found to segregate or degrade, raising concerns as these properties could lead to field and specification testing difficulties. It was recommended that the Australian PMB specification be altered to include the European storage stability test and a proposed thermal stability test. The specification should be worded so that failed batches are rapidly detected and corrective action taken to ensure subsequent batches are acceptable.
